Health Safety & Security Officer

As a long established, growing charity providing housing for older people the role of Health, Safety & Security Officer is an integral part of the organisation. 

The charity was established over 400 years ago to borough residents who were in housing and financial need, offering them help and support whilst maintaining their independence and dignity. 

This is a new role created out of growth and expansion in the charity. You will work under the guidance of the Projects and Estates Manager and the appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check.

The position would suit someone looking for a career in Health & Safety and the charity would look to offer training and for the person to undertake H&S qualifications which would be paid for. You do not necessarily need to have already trained in the field of H&S but you will need to have a willingness to learn and have some basic experience in H&S and use of electrical tools etc. and maintenance.

Purpose of job

To be responsible for all matters of Health, Safety & Security for staff and residents along with and under the guidance of the Projects & Estates Manager

Risk Assessments -

  • To carry out risk assessments as and where required
  • To carry out and update annually risk assessments in all communal areas
  • To follow up assessments with any further action required
  • To check that implemented actions have removed/reduced the risks
  • To monitor situations to ensure safe working practices
  • To accurately record findings
  • To ensure safe handling/storage of substances (COSHH)

Fire Safety & Equipment -      

  • To undertake Fire Safety Risk Assessments annually or when required
  • To accurately record all fire and fire related incidents
  • To ensure all Fire Safety information is collated and readily available for inspection
  • To be responsible for the checking/replacing/fixing of fire extinguishers and smoke detectors and making appropriate signage
  • To undertake weekly fire alarm testing and record keeping

Careline Equipment -

  • To order and control stock of replacement/additional Careline equipment
  • To install, update and replace Careline equipment as required in all residents’ almshouses
  • To regularly log into the online Careline system and check issues
  • To liaise with the Council’s Careline team and follow up on alerts and resolve any issues about reporting
  • To be responsible for the testing of all alarm systems and Careline peripheral equipment on a quarterly basis

Residents -

  • To regularly inspect residents’ almshouses to ensure all Careline equipment and smoke alarms are operating correctly
  • To regularly ensure residents are not hoarding and that they have a clear and safe entrance and exit from their almshouse in the event of an emergency
  • To remove and then re-install Health & Safety equipment in vacant almshouses   

Security & management of the key system -

  • To maintain the smooth running of the Master Key System
  • To update the Key Diary and Key Holders List with relevant information
  • To produce orders and keep records of equipment purchased
  • To liaise with locksmiths (JCM) and order and collect new keys from them
  • To remove/replace locks and security chains on vacant properties
  • To oversee the general maintenance of locks

CCTV -

  • To be responsible for all CCTV equipment and regularly check the equipment is working and displaying correctly
  • To liaise with ADT when necessary and arrange regular checks of equipment
  • To provide appropriate signage for CCTV equipment                                 

Portable Appliance Testing -

  • To run the Portable Appliance Testing programme of new residents’ equipment in-house                                              
  • To regularly test portable appliances in all communal areas

First Aid -        

  • To ensure suitable and adequate first aid equipment is provided and kept up to date
  • To keep records of injuries & first aid related incident

Legionella Testing -

  • To assist the Projects & Estates Manager in the control of legionella, through risk assessments, regular water temperature testing and taking action where required

Maintenance -

  • To assist the Caretaker or other staff with maintenance jobs when required
  • To oversee and manage the laundries, opening and closing them and emptying the token boxes

General -     

  • To assist and advise residents with regard to Health, Safety & Security matters and produce leaflets or advice notices as required
  • To ensure all staff Emergency Grab Bags are kept up to date
  • To undertake testing and maintenance of the defibrillators and update the various websites for the public defibrillators
  • To undertake monthly emergency lighting testing and annual battery drain down
  • To undertake any other matters relating to Health, Safety & Security as directed by the Projects & Estates Manager
  • To keep up to date computer files and paper records on all matters of health, safety and security
  • To keep up to date on all health and safety legislation
  • To undertaken training courses as required
  • To undertake any other tasks which are relevant to the role and deemed reasonable by the Projects & Estates Manager or the Chief Executive
  • To adhere at all times to the Charity’s Staff Code of Practice         

To be successful for the role of Health, Safety & Security Officer you will have:

Experience of using electrical tools

Have some basic understanding/work experience with the field of Health & Safety

Live close to Richmond/Twickenham

Be a car owner/driver - essential

In return the Health, Safety & Security Officer will receive a basic salary in the region of £25,000.You will also receive 25 days holiday plus bank holidays. The charity offers a group pension plan and will contribute 10% towards the plan alongside your contribution. They will also pay for car expenses (insurance, MOT, annual service, car tax). Hours are Monday - Friday 8.30am-5pm.
