Interview and CV Advice

We will provide you with as much support as you require to assist in creating a winning CV or preparing for a successful interview.

Writing a winning CV

Your CV should be concise and well structured. It is essential that the information is laid out in a clear and logical fashion so that it is easy for potential employers to read.

A CV should always be typed and printed on good quality paper. It is very important to make sure that the grammar and spelling is correct. Remember that an employers' first impression of you is formed from your CV.

Always include a covering letter with your CV. This letter should explain why you are interested in the vacancy and why you feel that you should be considered for the position. If you are sending a speculative CV, your letter should explain why you are interested in the company and what kind of position you are looking for.

Techniques for a successful interview

It is essential that you are well prepared for your interview - the more you know the more likely you are to be successful.

Be Prepared

It is crucial that you have plenty of background information on the company. We will provide this for you if you are an attending interview through us. Having an understanding of the company will demonstrate to employers that you are well prepared and therefore serious about the position.

Make sure that you have a job description and be confident about why you want the position.

Strengths and weaknesses - this is one of the most popular types of interview questions. Before attending the interview, it is good idea to ensure that you can talk about your strengths and are able to back them up with examples. Make sure that you are prepared to answer a question about your weaknesses also and are able to demonstrate how you overcome these.

First Impressions

Dress appropriately - even if the environment you will be working in is casual you need to make a good impression, so formal dress is always advisable.

Make sure that you arrive in good time; it does not create a good impression if you are late. (If possible, it is a good idea to do a practice run). If you are running late make sure you telephone ahead and explain the situation.

When introducing yourself to your interviewer, be confident - offer a firm handshake and remember to smile!

During the Interview

Be yourself, if it is the right job for you, your own personality will win you the position.

Use your listening skills.

If you don't understand a question, ask them to reiterate.

Don't be afraid to ask questions about the company and the role. If you find it useful then write a list of questions before you go in. Your interviewer will not mind if you consult your list at the end of the interview - it will show them that you are well prepared and that you are interested in the company.

If you are asked to talk about a previous position you should try to avoid replying with a purely factual answer about the job content. Instead, use this as an opportunity to highlight your strengths and what you have learnt from the experience.

At the end of the interview it is useful to let the company know that you are interested in the position.
